Fertilizers and Amendments
Healthier soil = healthier plants! We carry many organic certified soil inputs that will provide essential nutrients to your plants, deter pests, and ensure a more resilient future for your garden.
Why organic?
Conventional means of gardening and agriculture are sometimes considered to be damaging to the environment. For example, synthetic fertilizers can contain harmful chemicals that disrupt important soil microbiology. Soil is in fact teeming with life that works symbiotically with plants to ensure proper growth. Microorganisms break down organic material such as dead leaves, and convert it into nutrients that are easier for plants to absorb. Nurturing your soil by using organic methods will promote a healthy growing environment, whereas consistent use of synthetic fertilizers can result in “dead soil” devoid of these microorganisms.
What does “OMRI Listed” mean?
OMRI is an acronym for the Organic Materials Review Institute, an international nonprofit that certifies soil inputs for use in organic gardening and complies with USDA organic standards.
Other Certifications
Many products we carry are OMRI Listed, though some products hold certifications from other organizations. Some labels you may come across while searching for gardening inputs are outlined below.
Biodynamic farming principles are similar to those of organic farming. While organic farming doesn’t allow use of herbicides, pesticides, or GMOs, biodynamic farming does the same but goes a step further by focusing on creating a holistic environment that integrates human, animal, and plant interactions to promote sustainable growth.
